StoryCorps was founded in 2003 with a mission to preserve and share humanity’s stories in order to build connections between people and create a more just and compassionate world. Over the past 14 years, we have provided an estimated 400,000 people from across the U.S. with powerful opportunities to record interviews about their lives, pass wisdom from one generation to the next, and leave a legacy for future generations in our archive at the Library of Congress. The Associate Manager, Mobile Tour Outreach is a key member of StoryCorps’ Mobile Department, which oversees the operations of our MobileBooths and Mobile Tour. Our MobileBooths are recording studios housed in Airstream trailers; they operate year-round, making 4-6-week tour stops in towns and cities across the country, partnering with local public radio stations or other host partners during each tour stop. The Associate Manager is based in StoryCorps’ Brooklyn headquarters and performs a number of tasks to support the Mobile Tour’s outreach to diverse communities.
Effective, systematized outreach is integral to the achievement of StoryCorps and the Mobile Department’s participant diversity goals; the ideal candidate will have solid skills and experience in researching, planning, and executing community outreach and engagement. Strong logistical skills and multi-tasking abilities are required.
The Associate Manager, Mobile Tour Outreach reports to the Associate Director, Mobile Tour. The Associate Manager sets weekly outreach priorities and manages the day-to-day activities of the outreach team. There are three Mobile Facilitators; at any given time, 2 are working on the road, and 1 is working in the office, and they rotate on and off the road, typically working for about a month each time they are working in the office, providing administrative support for Mobile Tour outreach and reservations. The Associate Manager also hires, trains, and supervises two part-time Mobile interns.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Train new Facilitators on Mobile Tour specific office tasks including but not limited to outreach strategies, our reservation system, and participant engagement.
Manage day-to-day outreach priorities of Mobile Facilitators while in Brooklyn office (one Facilitator at a time, through a rotation of 3 Facilitator positions)
Hire, train, and supervise Mobile interns
Manage community engagement strategies and oversee all community outreach relationships with the Mobile Department, securing maximum participation by diverse communities in line with funder goals
Create and manage appointment reservations for outreach partners and the general public; oversee cancellations, wait lists, and systematic rollout of appointments in collaboration with Public Information
Assess existing Mobile outreach strategies, perform research, and recommend effective outreach methods in the Mobile Department, emphasizing our target participant demographic groups (e.g., African Americans and Latinos)
Collaborate with StoryCorps’ Marketing & Communications Department to strategize effective methods and timelines for executing Mobile-related marketing and communications activities to increase participation from diverse audiences (e.g., sending press releases, distributing marketing materials, etc.)
Collaborate with the Associate Director, Mobile Tour in planning and executing logistics for advance trips and community meetings for each Mobile stop
Plan, coordinate, and secure field recording days with strategically chosen outreach partners; maintain clear lines of communication with community partner and ensure feasibility of location and number of participants for the recording day
Create and manage weekly outreach reports outlining partnership progress and highlighting diversity targets and goals
Attend interdepartmental meetings to ensure collaboration and coordination of outreach strategies between departments
Coordinate with Production Department to ensure appointment times are available for production interviews in each city on the Mobile tour
Liaise between outreach partners and the Recording & Archive Department to set up archive partnerships
Oversee Mobile Department social media; guide the creation of an editorial calendar and coordinate posts. supervise outreach team’s external communications
Maintain inventory of StoryCorps collateral and promotional materials (printed materials, CDs, buttons, etc.); work with Development team to ensure ample inventory at all times
In coordination with the Associate Director, Mobile, develop StoryCorps App-related training tools and resources that will be shared with outreach partners to encourage their continued relationship with StoryCorps
Help develop and implement, in collaboration with Mobile team, an outreach partner workshop focusing on using the StoryCorps App to create community-based recording and archive projects
Perform other duties to support the Mobile Department and StoryCorps’ outreach efforts, as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications:
College degree, or high school diploma/equivalency plus at least 3 years of work experience in outreach and community engagement
Minimum 2 years’ experience working within diverse communities, including but not limited to conducting outreach on the ground
Excellent interpersonal, written/verbal communication, and public speaking skills
Ability to be flexible and adaptable to a fast-paced, growing, changing organization
Solid multi-tasking, planning, and logistical skills and attention to detail
Strong problem-solving and research skills
Strong conflict negotiation and collaborative skills
Ability to work independently as well as part of team
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and web-mail
Cultural competence/humility and the ability to work successfully with diverse groups of people
Experience providing staff supervision and evaluation
Ability to communicate clearly in Spanish and English, both orally and in writing
Proficiency on a Mac platform
