StoryCorps was founded in 2003 with a mission to preserve and share humanity’s stories in order to build connections between people and create a more just and compassionate world. Over the past 14 years, we have provided an estimated 400,000 people from across the U.S. with powerful opportunities to record interviews about their lives, pass wisdom from one generation to the next, and leave a legacy for future generations in our archive at the Library of Congress. Select interviews are edited for weekly broadcast on NPR’s Morning Edition and/or inclusion in our animations and podcasts. Together, these reach a broad national audience of tens-of-millions on public and digital media. All StoryCorps activities, from the delivery of our interview service, to our archive, to the creation and distribution of our produced content, are carried out with an unwavering commitment to excellence and the inclusion of underrepresented populations. Over the years, we have partnered with thousands of community organization from across the country to provide our interview service to their constituents. By collection, preserving, and broadly disseminating authentic voices from diverse participants across the U.S., StoryCorps promotes a deeper understanding – both historic and contemporary – of the many communities that constitute our nation. Our work has been widely recognized with several George Foster Peabody Awards, A MacArthur Award for Creative and Effective Institutions, the 2015 TED Prize, and a 2016 Emmy award for our animation, “Traffic Stop.”

Position Overview:

The Director, Annual Giving will be the strategic and implementing force behind StoryCorps individual giving programs and campaigns. The Director will have primary responsibility for leading the organization’s annual giving efforts (donors under $5,000 annually), setting strategy and executing fundraising plans for sustaining and growing the number of annual donors, the size of individual donations, and converting annual donors to major donors, with a major emphasis on donor acquisition, cultivation, and stewardship. The Director will also support the major giving efforts of the Chief External Relations Officer, the Chief Executive Officer, the President and Founder, and members of the Board of Directors. In concert with the Chief External Relations Officer, the Director will develop a comprehensive individual giving strategy, with a focus on building a pipeline of donors to serve the organization and its mission for years to come. Additionally, the Director will oversee two direct reports, the Associate Director, Individual Giving & Events, and the Manager, Database & Donor Recognition.

In its 15th year, StoryCorps is still a relatively new organization. Cultivating individual donors is critical to the long-term sustainability of StoryCorps, and the Director must have solid experience and appetite for developing strategies that attract new donors. The ideal candidate will excel in a fast-paced start-up environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Annual Giving Strategy Development & Execution:Oversee the goals and progress of StoryCorps’ Annual Giving Function

Develop and implement strategies for acquisition and solicitation that will build the pipeline needed to grow annual revenue from individuals; manage and monitor online giving initiatives, working collaboratively with other program areas to advance fundraising goals

Oversee all annual giving communications, including use of SalesForce’s Marketing Cloud to develop strategic calendar of donor stewardship and appeal emails

Execute donor materials, including briefing memos, proposals and stewardship materials

Leverage StoryCorps’ social media platforms to develop new fundraising campaigns and opportunities

Coordinate events logistics to ensure an exceptional donor experience, with a focus on cultivation and stewardship. Conceptualize and implement membership programs and small donor cultivation events;

Work with the Board of Directors to identify prospects and strategies to prospect, cultivate and solicit donors

Database Management & Monitoring:
Oversee database management, gift processing, development and fulfillment of donor benefits, gift recognition donor correspondence, and mailings

Monitor weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual activity to achieve major gift revenue goals

Assist with review and verification of donor recognition lists

Track and report relationship management activity using SalesForce including identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of prospective and current individual donors

Oversee efforts to recruit and manage event host committees and to steward event attendees, ensuring they remain committed to the organization’s mission and deepen their involvement

Provide direct supervision and evaluation of Associate Director, Individual Giving and the Manager, Database and Donor Recognition

Perform other duties to support StoryCorps Development function, as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications:

Required:Bachelor’s degree

5-7 years’ experience in individual giving, with a proven track record of donor acquisition, conversion, and retention

Direct experience in direct response strategies and techniques, including both direct mail and digital communications

Effective direct response writing skills with a record of successful donor appeals, renewals and stewardship

Deep understanding of CRM best practices, strategies and working within a sophisticated CRM to communicate and appeal to donor base

Drive for results, sense of urgency, and a demonstrated track record of meeting or exceeding revenue goals

Advanced verbal and written communication skills and impeccable attention to detail

Strong organizational and project management skills; adept at working under tight deadlines and managing multiple projects simultaneously

Experience providing staff supervision and leadership; strong team-building, conflict negotiation, and collaborative skills

Ability to be flexible and adaptable in order to contribute to problem-solving activities within a growing, changing organization

Cultural competence/humility and the ability to thrive in a diverse working environment

Preferred:Experience with SalesForce database and Marketing Cloud

Proficiency on a Mac platform
