Community Education Instructor
Youth Radio has provided an array of media training programs at Camp Wilmont Sweeney (Alameda County’s 24-hour residential program for 15-18 year old males) for over 10 years. We are currently in our second year focused on the use of writing and media literacy education in conjunction with media production skills to address behavioral health issues related to masculinity, violence, and sex. The Community Education Instructor will be working with incarcerated youth on site at Camp Wilmont Sweeney as well as at Youth Radio headquarters to train them in these areas.
Responsibilities:
- Facilitate weekly media literacy, writing, and media production workshops at Camp Sweeney
- Recruit 10-12 students per session (11 meetings over the course of 10 weeks) and clear participant eligibility with Probation Department Staff
- Create media literacy, production, and writing curriculum with appropriate exercises and activities in conjunction with staff Media Education Manager
- Lead a minimum of four (4) site visits to Youth Radio each session for training in technical media skills and recording and webcasting media content written during the course (*site visits are already established and built into session calendar)
- Meet weekly with Media Education Manager to review lesson plans and provide updates on class progress
Work Experience Requirements:
- Youth Development Practitioner with a minimum of 2 years experience in the field
- Experience using and teaching Adobe Photoshop and Reason music production software
- Experience in curriculum development for at least two previous programs
- Demonstrated classroom management skills
- Experience in a broadcast studio preferred
- Familiarity with youth in the juvenile justice system preferred
- Private means of transportation preferred
