Orientation to Nonprofit Technology (6/12)

This session sets the foundation for your work with technology. We’ll cover basic terminology, assessing what level of technology competence your organization is currently in, and how to improve that competence. Technologies best use for a nonprofit is when it is aligned with mission, but what does that look like and how do you begin to move towards that alignment. This session will guide you through understanding laying a strong foundation for using technology in your nonprofit.

Moving from Reactive to Proactive (6/19)

This session will get you started on moving away from being reactive with technology. We’ll provide some simple steps for starting to get a handle on technology in your organization. This includes not only your hardware and software, but the human side of the equation. We’ll show you how an organization’s culture, needs, resources and environment (not the tools) help guide thoughtful use of technology. You’ll be shown some tools to help you get started in moving away from a reactive, knee-jerk “band-aid” approach to a smarter more thoughtful approach.

Tools, Resources and Support (6/26)

Managing technology is a team effort – it takes a village to manage it well. That includes not only helpful tools and resources, but connecting to your organization’s community and the larger nonprofit technology community. This session covers ways to tap into your organization’s assets and networks to support your work. There is an active, helpful nonprofit technology community that struggles with the same issues that you do – we’ll show you ways to tap into that resource to get useful advice and support.

John Kenyon

John is a nonprofit technology educator and strategist who’s worked exclusively with nonprofits for over 20 years providing advice, teaching seminars and writing articles. John educates nonprofits about using their online presence strategically because he knows it can help their organizations operate more effectively and efficiently. Most recently he served as the Educational Program Manager for the Nonprofit Technology Network (NTEN) returning to private practice in late 2012. He was a contributing author on “Effective Online Communications” in the book Managing Technology to Meet your Mission (Jossey-Bass/Wiley, 2009). He is an adjunct professor at the University of San Francisco and has been a featured speaker across the US, England, Australia and online.

The Care and Feeding of the Small-Dollar Donor (7/9)

We take great care to nurture and support relationships with institutional and major donors, but what do we do to help our small-dollar donors feel connected, like their gift makes an impact? Today's small-dollar donor sees more, knows more, expects more, and has more insight than ever into the leverage his or her contribution can (and can't make). It's time for us to shift gears and provide offerings to our small-dollar donors that meet their needs and our missions without expecting one to sacrifice to the other.

In this session, participants will learn:

• About the research that informs us about the reactions and actions of the general donor.
• Some cutting-edge approaches to engaging the small-dollar donor in giving and loyalty.
• How social media sharing and expression play a part in the care and feeding of the small-dollar donor.
• Some concrete tools to begin to shift giving options to better match the giving proclivities of the small-dollar donor.

When Your Clients Tell the Story of Your Impact (7/16)

In today's world of the brief, compelling narrative, in the time of social media and sharing, we have the opportunity not only to shift our messaging into tweet-sized sound-bytes, but also to change our voice over to that of our program participant. When we shift our appeals to first-person brief narratives on the part of those helped and served by our programs and services, we start giving donors what we've learned they want - personal engagement with the story of our work and our impact.

For years we've relied on the case study, the example client, the photo and quote or even the photo of someone holding a cardboard placard to connect our work with the hearts of those we hope will give. Today, we have better tools and can start to use video, first-person narrative, and stories that people can browse, deciding for themselves how they'd like to help. In short, we can be quiet and let our clients represent themselves and the organizations that help them thrive. It's a changed paradigm and we need to keep up.

In this session, participants will:

• Learn about various current approaches to using client storytelling in development and marketing
• Explore the ethical and tactical challenges to putting the client in front of the camera and keyboard
• Examine the Benevolent.net approach to storytelling narrative in the social service and workforce development sector and the successes and challenges in the initial year
• Consider breaking the rules of donor engagement and bringing storytelling to the fore in one or more ways in service to the mission of their organizations

About the Presenter

A seasoned nonprofit leader with more than 20 years of strategic management, community partnership building, and organizational planning experience, Megan Kashner woke up on February 13, 2011, with the idea for Benevolent (www.benevolent.net). She previously served as an executive director for the Taproot Foundation and the Infant Welfare Society of Evanston, chief development officer for Chicago’s Deborah’s Place and program director for organizations including the Howard Area Community Center and the Heartland Alliance. A frequent panelist at conferences, Kashner most recently presented at the White House Forum on Philanthropy Innovation and at the Council on Foundations Family Philanthropy Conference.
